Poojas Explained:

Ganapathi and Vishwaksena (or Senadipati) are synonyms. Vishwaksena puja, prior to a religious ritual, is prescribed in Vaishnava agamas to remove obstacles from evil and to ensure proper organization. While Ganapati idols are ubiquitous, that of Vishwaksena are rare. Tirumala has one such temple.

Punyahavachanam is purificatory rite to achieve purity of body, mind and the equipment used in the ritual. The ritual consists of chanting aapOhistaa mantras, pavamaana mantras, agamarshaNa mantras etc.

Sankalpam is the pronouncement of the resolution expressing the devout desire of the sponsors and the participants to install the Vigrahas or the Moorthies, and animate them with spirit for the purpose of worshipping them.

Rakshabandan is the act of tying an auspicious cord around the wrists of sponsors to protect them from evil forces during pratisthapana ceremony.

Lord Vishnu told Sanatkumara ISuta Samhita the following about Purusha Sukta Homa: putrapradam aputraanam jayadam jayakaamlnaam bhuktidam bhuktikaaminam mokshadam moksha kaaminaam. It means “Progeny to those that seek progeny, success to those seeking success, material benefits to those seeking worldly enjoyment, and moksha to the moksha seekers”.

Similar sentiments are expressed in the Purusha Suktam. Oblations are offered to Lord Vishnu to the chanting of Purusha Shuktamto seek things, material and non-material, for the success of Prathistapana. “goddess, and the bestower of the fruit of liberation”. Shri sukatam invokes Lakshmi to seek her grace. Yagna-vidya maha-vidya guhya-vidya cha shobane; atma-vidya cha devi tvam vimukti-phaladayini (Vishnu Purana). It literally means “You are the knowledge of sacrifice, the worship of the universal form, and occult learning, O beauteous one. You are the knowledge of Brahman, O goddess, and the bestower of the fruit of liberation”. This fire ritual asks Lakshmi to give everything that is needed for success of Venkateshwara Sthapana.

Jaladivasam, or immersion of the idol in water upto a period of 45 days. Water has a very special place in vedic rituals. aapO vaa idagum sarvam. (Mahanarayana panishat). Literally it goes on to say, “All this is verily waters. All the entities are waters. The vital airs are waters. The animals are waters. Waters are necter. Food is waters. Waters shine out brilliantly. Waters shine out by themselves. Waters are not having any other one ruling over them. The Vedas are waters. The luminary bodies are waters. Truth is waters. All gods are waters. BhUrbhuvassvAhA”. Often, Jaladivasam is seen as a purifactory rite but in reality it should be seen in the context of what water really is!

Vastu homa is undertaken to appease the Vatsu purusha at the site of ceremony. Vastu purusha, as described in Rigveda is responsible for the balance of energies in a Vasati, or a living abode. Agni pratishta involves installation of specifically-designed fire altars (homa kunda). Through vedic chants and using Lord Agni as the medium, oblations are offered to gods including Vishnu to enable containment of the pervasive cosmic energy in a yantra. From the yantra it is transmitted to kalasha (pot). This is called Kalasa sthapana. Kalasa is also referred to as kumba.

Prabhanda PaaraayaNam refers to the chanting of compositions of Alwars in praise of Vishnuand his consort. Alwars are tamil saints and are considered great devotees of Lord Vishnu. In Srivaishnavism propounded by Ramanuja Acharya, the works of Alwars are considered equivalent to veda, and used in ritualistic worship along side Pancharatra Agama.

Aaradhana Homam: Sodasha Upacharas are offered during this Homa to the god and Ashtakshari homa is the fire ritual with oblations offered to the chanting of moola mantras of Narayana. This homa results in the liberation of positive forces following the utterance of beejakshara in the moola mantra.

Dhanyadivasam refers to keeping the idol immersed as completely as possible in paddy or permitted grains upto a period of 45 days. Again, Mahanarayanopanishat states, Sharvasya jagatahah Prabhu preeNathi Visva-Bhuk. This literally recognises Vishnu “as the controller and master of all this universe and as the very consumer of the entire universe”. And, begs Him to be pleased with this gesture of prANAgnihOthram, or the offering of the vital life force.

Venkateshwara suprabhatam was composed by Prativadi Bhayakaram Sri Annangar-AchArya swami of kancheepuram in early 1800 AD. This is chanted to wake up the lord to his praise.

Sudharashana as Lord Vishnu’s weapon represents his sankalpa shakti, and finds support in Ahirbudhaya samhita, a pancharatra agama text. This homa involves offering oblations to Lord Sudharshana mantra. Pida pariharam for Bhaktas and Pida pradanam for dushtas is a significant aspect of this ritual. Pida refers to devastation and suffering, pradanam to giving, dushta to the corrupted entity, and pariharam refers to repellation. The sankalpa shakti of Sudarshana wards off evil, and provides the positive energy needed for the homa.

Adhivasam and Adhivasa Homam are the steps where in all the previous adhivasams previously performed are repeated, and adhivasa homa is conducted to the chanting of hymns from veda and agama shastras.

Ratna or precious stones have found special mention in vedangas especially Jyotisham. The precious stones are said to be capable of receiving radiation from the navagrahas, or the nine celestial bodies. Specific designs of precious stones are used to counteract the malific celestial influences, or enhance them. Ratnaadhivasa involves covering the idol with precious stones and nobel metals to infuse the idol with benign energies. The related concept is Ratna nyasam.

Sayaadhivasam is the ritual of putting the murthi to yoganidra. Sleep has a primal role in vedic creation myth. Venkateshwara idol is put to yoganidra to the chanting of vedic hymns in brand new apparel on a specially prepared bed.

Panchagavya means the blend of five products obtained from cow (gavya means coming from cow, and pancha is five). It contains ghee, milk, curd, cow dung and cow’s urine. Snapana means application or bathing. Each of the gavya has an Adhiodevata, e.g., Vishnu is the presiding deity for ghee. Pancha Gavya Snapana enables elimination of malefic influence of planets and evil forces.

Maanonmaana Homa is preparatoryand prerequisite step to netronmilanam, or opening of the eye of Lord Venkateshwara. It is an oblation to Manonmana who is the kindler of the light of the soul. Sampaatha Ajya Sparsana refers to applying the ashes at the bottom of the homa kundas to the idol to infuse umpteen energies as part of the prathisthapana process. Moola Moorthi PranaPrathisthapana offering oblations to Lord Venkateshwara. Pratistha involves installation of chakra (disc), Shanka (conch), ornaments etc.

Maha Purnahuthi refers to the final sacrifice that completes all the sacrificial rites thus far. It involves preparing a special oblation with fruits, noble metals, coins, etc. in a special cloth and offered to the fire in the homa kunda along with Ajyam or ghee. The oblation is done to the chanting of the purnahuti mantra. Kumbha Udhvasanam refers to ritualistically displacing the installed kalasha and all the kumbhas to be taken in a procession, and for the purpose of using the sanctified waters for further prathisthapan rituals.

At the onset of Abhijit Lagna, Netromilanam or opening of the eye of Lord Venkateshwara is performed. Prana Prathistha is undertaken next. It is an involved process requiring sprinkling of the sanctified water behind closed doors, on the idol and chanting prana prathisthapana mantras including beeja aksharas.

Alankara or dressing up the Lord follows next. Keerthanam or praise to the lord singing his glories marks the moment. Maha Archana or the vedic puja of Lord Venkateshwara is next followed by Maha Aarathi. Asheerwadam or blessing of the devotees is very significant part of ritual. Acharaya satkaram, or the honoring of the priest for their work in prana prathisthapan ritual is
